Breathing Rate
Breathing rate is how many times you breathe per minute at rest. It reflects the health of your respiratory system, oxygen efficiency, and nervous system state. Slower, deeper breathing is generally a sign of better health and a calmer nervous system. Elite meditators and athletes sometimes breathe as slowly as 4–6 breaths per minute at rest.

Vsense detects breathing rate by analysing the subtle chest/face movements and signal changes in the rPPG waveform during the facial scan.
How it's scored
12–20 breaths/min is the normal adult range at rest. 12–16 is optimal. Below 12 is bradypnea. Above 20 is tachypnea and may indicate respiratory distress, anxiety, or illness.
What a high reading means
An elevated resting breathing rate (above 20) can indicate anxiety, respiratory infection, asthma, heart failure, fever, or metabolic acidosis. It means your body is working harder than it should to maintain oxygen levels. Breathing too fast also leads to over-breathing (hyperventilation), which reduces CO2 and can cause dizziness, tingling, and fatigue.
What a low reading means
A very low breathing rate (below 10) at rest is uncommon and may indicate sedation, neurological issues, or certain medications. If you feel fine and it's 10–12, you may simply be a very relaxed, efficient breather.
How to improve it
Exercise
- Any aerobic exercise trains your respiratory muscles and improves breathing efficiency over time
- Swimming is especially effective at improving breathing capacity — swimmers learn breath control naturally
- Pranayama (yogic breathing) practices directly train breathing patterns and lung capacity
- Singing or playing wind instruments strengthens respiratory muscles and diaphragm
- Diaphragmatic breathing exercise: lie flat, place hand on belly, breathe so only the belly rises — 10 min/day

- Avoid very large meals — they push the diaphragm up and restrict breathing
